Focal Bathys

Focal Bathys

Universal Summary

The Bathys is a closed-back wireless ANC over-ear built around a 40mm aluminium-magnesium M-shaped dome driver, and it is judged first on sound. The tuning follows a Harman-leaning philosophy: smooth and fairly dense, with a clean midrange called a standout in its class, vocals forward without shouting, and a top end that relaxes from about 4kHz so sparkle is limited while sibilance is effectively absent. Bass is where accounts split, between a lifted shelf peaking around 50Hz that reads as powerful and punchy, and a low end described as subdued, or as deep sub-bass rumble that reserves itself rather than dominating. Staging divides the same way, from among the best heard on a Bluetooth over-ear to a rounded, intimate space whose distance portrayal leaves something to be desired. Running the headphone over USB-DAC instead of Bluetooth tightens the low end, adds treble bite and enlarges the stage. Build draws less argument: magnesium yokes, an aluminium headband, leather and memory foam pads, 350g, and no creak in the articulation. Noise cancelling is strong below roughly 1-2kHz and lets more midrange and voice through, and it is placed behind the Sony, Bose and Apple flagships, with low-frequency attenuation measured close to 20dB. There is no LDAC and no passive mode, so a flat battery means silence. Price is the standing objection: it launched at $799, and one verdict is that less expensive alternatives cover most of the same ground.

Strengths

  • Sound quality is the headline: an accurate frequency balance that earns the best-sounding-ANC-headphone label in this category.
  • Midrange is the standout band, cleanly separated from the bass and tonally transparent, with a 3kHz hump balancing male and female vocals.
  • Premium build for the class: magnesium yokes, an aluminium headband, leather and memory foam pads, and no creak in the articulation.
  • USB-DAC mode is a real second gear, tightening the low end, adding treble bite and enlarging the stage well past Bluetooth.
  • Battery beat its 30-hour rating in a standardized test, running 31 hours 30 minutes with ANC engaged.
  • The top end sidesteps the 6kHz and 8kHz sharpness zones, so long sessions stay clean with effectively no sibilance.

Weaknesses

  • Noise cancelling sits behind the Sony, Bose and Apple flagships, with low-frequency attenuation measured close to 20dB.
  • Cancellation weakens above roughly 1-2kHz, letting more midrange and human voice through than rival flagships do.
  • Treble relaxes from about 4kHz, so air and sparkle are limited and percussion bite and crunch are reduced.
  • Stage depth is intimate over Bluetooth and distance portrayal is weak, a limit of the closed-back ANC design.
  • No LDAC, and no passive mode: once the battery is flat the headphone stops working entirely.
  • The thin headband can cause soreness at the crown after a few hours, and 350g can be a problem for slighter listeners.

Best For

  • Travelling listeners who want audiophile tonality first and will accept good rather than class-leading noise cancelling
  • Desk users who will run it as a USB-DAC headphone at work and switch to Bluetooth on the move
  • Vocal-forward listeners in pop and rock who want mids up front and the treble kept polite
  • Long-session listeners who want a non-fatiguing top end with essentially no sibilance
  • Buyers moving up from a consumer ANC flagship specifically for sound quality rather than feature count

Focal Bathys review

The measurement-led take. Calls the Bathys the best-sounding ANC headphone while measuring only about 20dB of low-frequency attenuation, calling the isolation comparatively pedestrian next to Sony and Apple, and concluding that the price is steep for most consumers.

Focal Bathys Review: Moving the Goal Posts

A four-page review that names the midrange a standout in class and credits the Bathys with the best sound quality among its peers, while flagging crown soreness from the thin headband, hiss in ambient mode, no LDAC and no passive mode.

Focal Bathys Review

A multi-page subjective review at the $799 launch price. Hears a Harman-friendly, warm-to-natural tuning with a lifted 50Hz bass shelf and a relaxed top end, praises the build and comfort, and positions the Bathys as a serious upgrade on consumer headphones for travelling audiophiles despite ANC that is not yet at Sony and Bose levels.

Focal Bathys Review

Hears a darker signature with reserved but deep sub-bass and gives the most positive staging assessment of the set, calling it one of the best soundstages on a Bluetooth over-ear, while conceding that $799 may be intimidating next to the Sony WH-1000XM5 and Sennheiser Momentum 4.
